For what used to be a food blog is now just an ordinary rambling. Stay fed, friends.

REAL STEEL (2011)

Director: Shawn Levy

Runtime Ratio to Feature: 5:254

Robots fighting robots a la Rock ‘em Sock ‘em, but more extreme.  Throw in Hugh Jackman desperately needing a hug and a kick in the right direction and you’ve got yourself one helluva trailer.  This also stars a little kid who reminds a certain someone (me) of a young certain someone (Anakin Skywalker).  Those badass looking robots? My guess is that this kid is the only human who can pilot one (besides maybe Hugh Jackman).

This has the one story quality that I almost always despise in a trailer, a complete story arc.  It feels a lot like the reader’s digest version of the feature and for me, that usually kills any interest in going farther.  However, a movie about fighting robots not directed by Michael Bay might just have some entertainment left to offer me, quite possibly even a great deal of it.  I already have an inkling how this story goes, meaning I could take this marshmallow trailer and put it in the microwave.  It will expand and get bigger, but will ultimately taste exactly the same as it did before I put it in the microwave.

What I Expect From the Feature: Hugh Jackman kicks ass as a fighter, then loses his way.  When he gets his chance in a new kind of ring, he finds success again but this time it’s different because he has to look after this little kid, and try to have a nurturing relationship with his girlfriend (maybe wife, who cares).  Ultimately, he and the kid will build up this underdog robot and take it the championship before, where they will maybe win, maybe lose (probably win), but either way, Hugh will learn a valuable lesson and be better for the experience.  Also, someone will die, or at least a robot will get crushed into bits.

Tastes Like: Rocky, Rocky V, A Marshmallow

Rating: Off with their (robot) heads! 7/10

FORWARD FRIDAYS:

My good friend Derek started a new blog that rates movie trailers. Two reasons why I love 2 Minute Movie Meals: ONE. It’s unpretentiously funny (most of the time). As a recent film graduate it would have been incredibly easy for him to fall into the “Citizen Kane is the only film that gets me” arena. Luckily he’s just judging trailers so no worries! TWO. He compares trailers to food. Even I can understand food metaphors.

Good work Derek.
